Our days in this world brothers and sisters are limited, and surely, they will come to an end. Allāh سبحانه وتعالى says:Our days in this world brothers and sisters are limited, and surely, they will come to an end.

Every soul shall taste death.

Shaykh ʿAbdur Raḥmān ibn Siʿdī رحمه الله تعالى said about this verse in his tafsīr:

This noble verse teaches [us] to abstain from the worldly life as it will perish and won’t last.

Our days are limited. This is guaranteed and known to all of us. Yet we do not know the number of days assigned to us. For each person it is different. Some are given longer. Some shorter. On top of this we do not know where our days will end, or even how they will end.

The Knower of the unseen says:

Verily, Allāh! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allāh is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).

How many of our beloved family members and our friends, who used to walk and talk with us, who we used to laugh with, who we used to eat and drink with, are no longer with us as they have passed on to the life of the Barzakh. Thus, a person who does not know when his time will come to an end, must make sure that he is ready to receive death at all times.

To Allāh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.

It was narrated in the book Al-Ḥilyah of Abū Nuʿaim رحمه الله تعالى that Ḥasan Al-Basrī رحمه الله تعالى said to a man about this verse:

If you know that you will return to Allāh , then know that He will question you, and if you know that He will question you, then prepare answers for the questions.

Do not be deceived by this worldly life and its temptations.

Pay attention when your Lord says:

Let not then this (worldly) present life deceive you.

And says:

And the life of this world is nothing but play and amusement. But far better is the house in the Hereafter for those who are Al-Muttaqūn. Will you not then understand?

Rasūlullāh said in a ḥadīth collected by Imām Al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ, upon the authority of the great companion, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar

Be in this world as if you are stranger or a passerby.

And ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما used to say:

If you reach the evening, do not wait until morning. And if you reach the morning, do not wait until the evening. And benefit in your health, before your sickness, and benefit in your life before your death.

And Allāh has warned us to be wary of those who had been deceived by this worldly life when He says:

And leave alone those who take their religion as play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world.

And says:

Then, for him who Ṭaghá (transgressed all bounds, in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allāh)

And preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts),

Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire;

Rasūlullāh said in a ḥadīth, collected by At-Tirmidhī رحمه الله تعالى in his Jāmiʿ, upon the authority of the great companion Abū Hurairah رضي الله عنه:

And verily, the world is cursed and so is everything in it except for the remembrance of Allāh, and what is conducive to that, and one who has knowledge or acquiring knowledge.

If a person he understands all of this, then he is upon a great goodness and in need of thanking his Lord .

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allāh), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.”

This worldly life will surely end without any single doubt. Do not wait until it’s too late where one will not have anything except regret.

He will say: “Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for my life!”

Shaykh ʿAbdur Raḥman As-Siʿdī رحمه الله تعالى said in his tafsīr about this verse:

He will say in regret upon what he had wasted in the rights of Allāh: woe to me, if only I had done something for my permanent life.

And he also said:

And in this verse is an evidence to show that the life which it’s foundations, perfection, and pleasures ought to be pursued is the life of the hereafter, for it is a permanent and eternal life.
